Diet Coke is for fat people

There’s a good chance there are a few of you reading this with a Diet Coke sitting next to you and you’re well on your way to being offended. Keep reading before you get mad. There’s a point to it all.

Let me start by telling you a story. One day I was sitting in a meeting with a client. I believe we were having the meeting over lunch so everyone was eating. For some reason we veered onto the topic of diet and losing weight. It was at this point that my client said, “Have you ever noticed that only fat people drink Diet Coke?” This struck me as funny for a few reasons. One, because there were two other people at the meeting with us, both of whom where drinking Diet Coke at the time. They were also no where near fat. So, after laughing at him for about 30 minutes, it stuck in my head as a semi-joke that Diet Coke is for fat people.

Fast forward to another lunch meeting last week (I’ve got to stop having lunch meeting) where my waiter insisted that I must be drinking Diet Coke. Every time he would come to refill my glass he would say, “You’re having Diet Coke, right?” “No, Dr. Pepper,” I would answer. This happened about five times before I began to be a little hurt with that voice in the back of my head quoting, “Diet Coke is for fat people.”

So now comes confession time. I’m 27 years old. I eat like I’m still 17. My metabolism decided to take an extended vacation at about the age of 20. I don’t think it’s coming back.

I am 41 pounds overweight. I’m six-foot-two, so I’ve been able to get away with it for longer than I should have, but it’s really starting to have an effect on my life. I don’t have the energy I should and I just feel like crap after every meal when I usually eat way too much.

So, inspired by Anne and Carlos, I’m going to use this blog as a motivational tool. Each Monday I’ll weigh in and give a recap on how I did that week. This Monday’s official weight: 241 pounds. I started three days ago just eating less and have already lost three pounds so I’m headed in the right direction. I’m not committing to any kind of “daily” exercise routine because I know it won’t happen. However, when my schedule allows, I will be on the treadmill. I’m not even going to commit to “eating better.” What I will commit to is eating less. Not the most revolutionary diet in the world. Just push back from the table and step onto the treadmill. I’m not comfortable taking any kind of diet pills. I want to do it right. Plus I know once I lose the weight, the goal becomes keeping it off. If I use diet pills to get it off, it will just come back when I stop taking them. If I lose 41 pounds by eating less, I’ll be used to eating less and hopefully won’t gain it back.

So, there it is. I’ve never liked Diet Coke and I don’t plan to start now.

    YAY! That is so awesome. I lost almost 40 lbs on the water diet…which isn’t a diet because you can still eat pretty much everything…you just eat less. Drink one glass of water before, during, after each meal…you will lose 1-3 lbs/week consistently. PROMISE. It is tough at first, and you PEE a LOT. But that was the only way I have been able to lose the weight and keep it off (five months strong!)

    PS – I was nursing a diet coke as I read this. 🙂 And I am not fat!! Anymore…

    That’s what I’m talking about! The diet where I can eat anything. Every diet I’ve ever tried in the past involved eating nothing I liked. They always lasted about a week before I fell off the wagon.

    That has to be what it is. If I cut out salt I will probably lose 40 pounds. That midsection…it’s all water. YES!

    Anne – I drink it throughout the day. Nothing strategic or anything.

    Hi Chad,

    I found your blog as I was researching information on artificial sweeteners.

    I tried looking at your Monday entries and just in general but only found a couple entries related to your weight loss progress in Jan., 2008.

      No, at the time, not even close. Over the next four-ish years I rose to 250-255 pounds.

      I finally got fed up with having no energy and starting seeing a great chiropractor/nutritionist. He put me on a very specific eating plan. I knew what to eat and when to eat it. I did that for a month and it became a habit I’m still sticking with. He also had me add twice-a-week workouts.

      So far I’m down 20 pounds and it’s been a great lifestyle change for me. The boost in energy has been great and I’m healthier than I think I’ve ever been. 20 more pounds to go, but it’s very doable for me now.
